Amsterdam Airport - Schiphol

Amsterdam is a popular destination and it is relatively easy to get there by plane, car, train or boat. There are cheap flights to Amsterdam from most European airports.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is Europe's fourth largest airport it has the code AMS, and is located approximately 20 kilometers from the center of Amsterdam.

Many are attracted by going to Amsterdam, which is one of Europe's most popular capitals with a lot of culture and other attractions.

Transfer to central Amsterdam from Schiphol

The easiest way to get into the center of Amsterdam from the airport is to take the direct train which leaves directly from the arrivals hall every ten minutes.

Trains

A ticket costs around €10, tickets can be bought in one of the machines or at the ticket office at the airport. The train station is "underneath" the arrivals hall.

Bus

Runs every ten minutes and a ticket costs €8.

Taxi

Available from different companies and the cars stand in the "queue" outside the flying plastic, avoid taxi drivers standing right outside the doors.

The prices vary a bit depending on where in the city you are going, but usually it lands at €30-50 (it is possible to negotiate with the drivers).

Private transfer

If you want to splurge a little extra (or there are a few more people), there are also private transfers that you can pre-book: a minibus for 7 people or car for 3 - 7 travelers, with space for as many suitcases as people.

Uber

Costs about the same as a taxi, but you have to figure out where to meet your driver, it's often a long way from the airport, so not really worth it.

If they are unlucky, they completely rely on their GPS and don't know the city very well.

Having the suit available at hand when out on the town in Amsterdam is recommended. Many shops and department stores ask you to identify yourself with your passport when shopping with your credit card.

Many hotel also want you to show your passport at the reception when you go in during the first few days. It's easy to get access to ATMs all over town, but exchanging some cash at home and taking it with you is always a good idea.

Make sure to get smaller denominations as not everyone has change for the largest bills. Comfortable shoes are also a good idea if you are going to walk around the city for a whole day. Amsterdam is a classic walking city and you can best discover all its tourist attractions on foot.
